Seven Questions Frequently Asked About Choosing a Domain Name

Placed in Web Hosting Guide | March 4th, 2010

One of the most common questions I am asked by my clients is “What domain name should I do for my site?”. In response, I highly recommend taking into account various factors. In the next article, I pass by these factors in a question and answer:

1. Should I choose a domain name country code (wie. CO.UK or. CA), or top-level domain worldwide. COM?

If your target market is specific to a country, I recommend the use of domain names, country code, especially if you have physical products that are delivered only in this country for sale. Many people I talked to say they often do not know where to find online stores, and can not be achieved until the box and you will be asked to pay in foreign currency that are not in able to bring products to their shopping cart, not to sell on the international site. Once the code names of a country domain at a time, you can inform potential customers that you are in the country where they are and that your service is designed specifically for the people.

Alternatively, if you developed a website in order to exchange information with little or no content which is relevant only in a part of the world, then my advice would be to choose a global summit of top-level domain as needed. Com.

2. Should I break up words in my domain name with hyphens? Widget is’-shop.com ‘better than’ widgetshop.com “?

It seems a general consensus within the industry of search engine optimization, which helps with a hyphen engines derived search for terms within a URL are, therefore, these sites are higher assessed the results of search engines. However, there is also speculation that using 2 or punished more hyphens in the domain name. In this sense, I would not advise anyone to use most of their custom from organic results of search engines for a hyphen in their domain names for their search keywords targeted separate plans.

However, if your business model is not heavy on optimizing search engines, my recommendation would be without hyphens in your domain, since the vast majority of internet users intuitively enter domain names in their address bar of your browser without hyphen. In the circles of domain name value assessment, the version not a hyphen in a domain name is generally more difficult.

To optimize search engine, studies show that the hyphen, enter a benefit, but overall, I would not recommend using any hyphens in your domain.

3. Is it better (paragraphs 2, 3, etc.) and words for numbers (two, three, etc.) within my domain?

In general, I discourage anyone from word of mouth from a number of them, either in numbers or words in their domain names. The reason is that a domain name easy to remember and easy to spell correctly. Take, for example, you had the domain name “widgets4u.com. If anyone is interested in your product justice, and tell them to visit your site, you can tell them, especially the 4 and the digital U is a simple letter. Otherwise, they may widgetsforyou.com input”, ‘widgets4you.com’, ‘widgetsforu.com “and end at the site of one of your competitors.

But if you’re willing to accept this risk, from my experience, the laity rather instinctively digital version of a number into a domain. Therefore, “use widgets2.com ‘, not’ widgetstwo.com.

4. How long should my domain name?

As short as possible. Long domain names are more difficult to remember for your customers to take more time to type, lots more (one might ask, with your domain name) spell letter by letter to some customers and may be more difficult is actually placed on your business cards, advertisements in print media and others. I have a client whose company consists of four words, two of which are difficult to spell. My advice to him was to get a domain name with the first letter of each word is only possible using very easy to prove.

If you target specific search terms, I recommend that your domain name consists of keywords and as little as possible otherwise. If you are targeted ‘purple widgets’, my advice would be the domain name are used purplewidgets.com. If the domain is not available, I also recommend an additional word at the end. For example, I personally have a site that targets the search keyword ‘weight loss to expect. How about “weightloss.com ‘and’ weightloss.co.uk were already registered - so I decided to use the domain name” weightlossweb.co. United Kingdom. The election is a word that begins with the same letter as the first keyword helps your visitors remember your domain name. So, back to the purple widgets example: Alternative domain names could “purplewidgetpro.com ‘,’ purplewidgetpower.com ‘and’ purplewidgetparadise.com.

5. Some are extensions of domain names better than others?

Yes. In general, the top most desirable top-level domain are is. COM. Sites chosen charities. ORG, explaining that they are a nonprofit organization, but currently there are no restrictions on who can. ORG register domain names or what they should be used - and still use many commercial sites.

My “classification” extensions preferred domain name is the following:

1. COM
2 Country-code (. CO.UK,. CA. IE, etc.)
3. NET
4. ORG
5. BIZ
6. INFO
7. NAME

Currently I have over 300 domain names registered, of which none are. INFO or. NAME. I only recommend registry. BIZ,. INFO or. NAME domains if they protect a large site with a brand name. For example, my name trademark is Starsol.co.uk. At the time of this writing, ‘Starsol.com is currently registered by the domain-squatters, the issue for a price exorbitant. I decided registry “Starsol.biz” to avoid a similar situation happens in the future. I think it is very unlikely that anyone with the type of domain with extension BIZ. in the address bar in the search my site - but if I’m not registered in the name of myself - and someone who could use it for purposes which may include damage my brand.

6. What. And TV. WHAT?

Even if it is marketed as such. TV is not television and will be. A does not mean that the Website or the world in the field. . Television is the extension of country code for Tuvalu and. WAS is for Samoa. Tuvalu is small island state in the Western Pacific acquired with a population of about 11,000 in the Western Pacific, withdrew its independence from Britain in 1978. Samoa, also in the Pacific, the independence of New Zealand 1962 and has a population of about 180,000. If these countries are not your target market, I discourage you from using personally like the names of their country code domain.

Other domain names like. FM (Federated States of Micronesia), as the TLD for radio stations and. CC (Cocos Islands) masquerades.

7. Why do some registrars domain more than others? Are more domain names?

Perhaps surprisingly, it is a question I asked on several occasions. Like how certain supermarkets, where more than others for identical cans of soda and other registration costs domain, the burden also different costs of registration of the domain. Although some name registrars domain may provide additional tools registration domain name, domain names are registered for $ 8.95 per year recorded in exactly the same manner and to develop a product for $ 35.00 per year. When I do my own service areas a plug here Starsol with http://www.starsol.co.uk/domains/ offers. COM registration for what I think some of the best prices on the net.

I hope this article has you in finding a perfect domain name helped. However, I would add that, with registrations of domain names are so cheap that the registration of multiple domains and redirecting them could be based on your ONE “main domain” to be a very good idea. If you find the domain name will be difficult marketing, I would strongly advise you to subscribe at least as well. COM version of the domain name, and if you are outside the United States for the country version of the relevant registration of the domain name. Many customers may lose your entry wrong extension when looking for your site, possibly resulting in your customers to competitors by you, or as my personal situation I described above, can have a domain name squatter registering a domain name similar to yours such as lead, in the hope that you will spend several thousands of them mean.
